Presidents Message

Executive Board

January 2012

Greeting Colleagues,

We are wishing all of you a Happy and Prosperous New Year 2012!!!

As always, we find ourselves wondering how time flies.  It seems like 2011 went by so fast.  That being the case, we are getting ready for a new and busy year 2012 as we continue to develop ourselves professionally in our respective career paths.

This is also a time for us to evaluate where we are in our life and career.  Questions we might ask of ourselves could include, but not be limited to the following:  Are we where we want to be?  Does my job define me or does my life define me?  Am I balanced in my life?  Where is there room for improvement…personally and/or professionally?  Am I happy?

Ahh…the list of “New Year” resolutions!!  If you are anything like me, I have a few already.  I have my personal and professional list category.  I will share one thought on a lesson learned when observing a “Thinking for a Change” group session.  The group facilitator shared with the group that one rule he lived by was not to be measured by the good things he did in life but, instead for the small number of people he may have harmed.  He shared with the group that every day his focus was to keep that number as small as he possibly could.  Personally, to me that was a much more profound statement.  Something I felt needed to be a mission for me as well.  A lesson I shared with my children.

And now for what’s new with NOHCJ….  Since my last message to you and in light of the current economy, we, the NOHCJ Executive Board, very recently regrettably decided and agreed it would be best to cancel the upcoming September 2012 Conference in Austin, Texas.  Our goal is to continue to develop our membership while at the same time reaching out to our members and assisting in any way we can.  In the meantime, we will reserve our efforts until we can be more assured of a more successful conference for our participants and conference sponsors.  I know many potential attendees were looking forward to the conference and we apologize for any inconveniences this may have caused.

We will be focusing on broadening our outreach to current and potential members, as well as identifying strategies to create a means for our membership to become more engaged.  The challenge is to identify the means to do this outreach at little or no cost to our members and the organization.

One area we are working on is our website.   As you can see, there has already been a significant change in how it looks.  Efforts are underway to keep our membership up to date with current events as they develop.   Please consider joining NOHCJ, and if you are interested in volunteering, we are actively recruiting and welcome anyone interested in assisting us further our mission.  Please feel free to email me at if you should have any questions.

Again, wishing you a Feliz y Prospero Año Nuevo!!
